Angela Davis became a master scholar who studied at the Sorbonne. She joined the U. Communist Party and was jailed for charges related to a prison outbreak, though ultimately cleared. Davis was born on January 26, , in Birmingham, Alabama. She grew up in a middle-class neighborhood dubbed “Dynamite Hill,” due to many of the African American homes in the area that were bombed by the Ku Klux Klan. Davis’ father, Frank, owned a service station, while her mother, Sallye, taught elementary school and was an active member of the NAACP. Sallye would later pursue her master’s degree at NYU and Davis would accompany her there as a teenager. Davis is best known as a radical African American educator and activist for civil rights and other social issues. She knew about racial prejudice from her experiences with discrimination growing up in Alabama. As a teenager, Davis organized interracial study groups, which were broken up by the police.

Rape culture is a sociological concept for a setting in which rape is pervasive and normalized due to societal attitudes about gender and sexuality. Entire societies have been alleged to be rape cultures. The notion of rape culture was developed by second-wave feminists , primarily in the United States, beginning in the s. Critics of the concept dispute the existence or extent of rape culture, arguing that the concept is too narrow or that, although there are cultures where rape is pervasive, the idea of a rape culture can imply that the rapist is not at fault but rather the society that enables rape.
There have been many movements that been made in order to address rape culture, such as SlutWalk and Me Too. These movements have helped share people’s stories through the use of hashtags which are embodied and connected to rape. The term “rape culture” was first coined in the s in the United States by second-wave feminists and was applied to contemporary American culture as a whole. Previously, according to Canadian psychology professor Alexandra Rutherford , most Americans assumed that rape, incest, and wife-beating rarely happened.
Rape was defined as a crime of violence rather than a crime of sex as it had been before and the focus of rape shifted from desire for sexual pleasure to one of male domination, intimidation and a sense of control over gender norms.

When stay-at-home measures aimed at curbing the spread of COVID went into effect earlier this spring, something weird happened to our sense of geography. This had particularly brutal consequences for people who had been enjoying the giddy, touchy-feely early stages of a romance. But over the following weeks, as social-distancing protocols set in, the texting communication between Barcelo and his Bumble friend went from a steady stream of check-ins to a slow trickle of memes and occasional jokes.
When the coronavirus arrived, many people involved in romances that were just starting to materialize found themselves thrown into what felt like an involuntary long-distance relationship—and then watched their promising new fling sputter and slow down, in many cases to a complete halt. The loss of physical togetherness, for one thing, can take away some of the foundational experiences that lasting relationships are built on.
